This week’s newsletter has a wide-ranging collection of short items, but with two general themes.

The first is the increase in the national minimum wage (NMW) for pay reference periods starting on or after 1 October. Corresponding wage rises also apply to agricultural wages and this week we give details of the changes that apply to agricultural workers in England and Wales. BERR has also updated its guidance booklet on the NMW, although it is a shame that the examples provided are not based on the October 2008 rates.

The second general theme is online filing of PAYE in-year forms. There are online service restrictions near the end of October, following which the new re-designed P45 will come into use. You need to look at your stocks of the old form, bearing in mind that it can continue to be used until the end of the tax year. Also have a look at how your payroll system holds employee’s addresses to ensure that details you provide on P45s and P46s are consistent with HMRC’s requirements.

This week’s Employer FAQ is a little unusual in that it reproduces a series of questions and answers on P45 and P46 procedures published by HMRC in its recent Notes for Payroll Software Developers.
